Closing my eyes, I nodded. The clandestine nature of our relationship put an unnecessary pressure upon me as well, but I tried not to show it around her. In that respect, perhaps I did view myself as her "father," always wanting to be her pillar of support, always wanting to make things okay for her.
Looking toward the large window, I had an idea. The window overlooked the ocean, and the pillow-covered window seat was as long and as wide as a sofa.
"Let's not hide any longer," I said. As if to prove my point, I held her tightly and carefully stood. My intelligent young student buried her face in my neck, her arms tight around me, her tears slowing.
"We'll make love, right here," I whispered as I lowered her onto the pillows, "right here where the whole world can see just how much you mean to me."
